Your June checklist for fresh, safe, and efficient appliances
Section 1: Ice Maker Maintenance (Standalone or Built-In)
Why it matters in June:
High temperatures + constant use + humidity = ideal conditions for bacteria, mold, and bad odors in your ice machine.
What to do:
- Unplug the machine. Always disconnect from power before cleaning.
- Empty the ice bin and discard all ice, even if it looks clean.
- Remove removable parts (scoop, tray, reservoir lid) and wash with warm water + mild dish soap.
- Clean the interior with a solution of:
- 1 part white vinegar + 2 parts warm water
- or a food-safe ice maker cleaner
- Use a soft brush or cloth to reach corners and crevices.
- Wipe down the exterior, especially around the vents.
- Run a rinse cycle (if automatic) or flush with clean water.
- Let all parts air-dry completely before reconnecting.
Do this every 2–3 weeks in Florida summer, or weekly for vacation rentals.
Section 2: Refrigerator Deep Cleaning & Disinfection
Why it matters in June:
Humidity + power surges + spoiled food = odors, bacteria, and appliance stress.
Steps to follow:
- Remove all food and place perishables in a cooler.
- Take out all drawers and shelves — wash with warm water + dish soap.
- Wipe interior walls with a disinfecting solution:
- 2 tbsp baking soda + 1 quart warm water for regular cleaning
- or equal parts vinegar + water to neutralize odor
- Don’t forget rubber seals (gaskets):
- Use a toothbrush to remove dirt
- Wipe with mild vinegar solution to prevent mold
- Dry all surfaces with a clean towel.
- Replace food only once everything is fully dry.
Optional: Add an open box of baking soda inside the fridge to keep odors down.
Bonus Maintenance Tips (For Both)
- Check drainage tubes for blockages
- Clean dust off rear coils (helps with energy efficiency)
- Make sure both units are level to avoid leaks
- Set temperature correctly:
- Fridge: 37–40°F (3–4°C)
- Freezer/Ice Maker: 0°F (–18°C)
